Life in America

This page is dedicated to resources, tips, and tricks. Please note that this is a live list that I will keep updating as I learn information and test it out. Some of the advice below is going to be effective for international students and generally newcomers to the US.

Connect with other international students. It is absolutely instrumental to connect with people who are going through the same experience as you. When you come arrive to the new country, it is likely that you might feel alone and lost, at least that’s how I felt. For this reason, I set a goal which was to find friends who would authentically understand what I was would be going through. As a result, I established two strong friendships with international students from other countries. Since we were all going through the similar challenges like homesickness, missing favorite foods and family, we were able to nurture and support each other.

Attend local interest group events. It is important to get to know your neighborhood, city, and community. By attending these events you can meet new people, with interests similar to yours, explore the city and acquire new skills. Realistically, it may be hard to learn all this by yourself, so I recommend joining a local interest groups and events. The easiest and the most affordable place to find such events would be your local library. The libraries organize events such as history tours, crafts and technology skills. In the Boston area, a lot of museums also offer free or discounted museum passes. Thus, you will get more familiar with your environment and start feeling more comfortable.
